OUR DISCOVERIES
|
|
|
|
We
are one of the only people exploring and travelling into these remote places
and creeks of the lake, it happens sometimes that we discover engravings or
ancient caves. We can count 6 sites and they are only known to us. The oldest
one is a prehistorical and the latest one are pre-dynastic pharaonic barks
from around 3500 - 3000 years B.C. Every site has its little story, they have
been either discovered by one of our guests (this was the case of Laurent
Méric who while he was following the traces of a jackal, found himself in
front of 16 engraved pharaonic barks) or by Besharia Bedouins, if we have the
chance to meet them and ask about their little secret discoveries.

|
There
is very little knowledge about the Besharia Bedouins and you will hardly find
any literature on these forgotten nomad people. They live between Sudan and Egypt and they are the only permanent habitants of the Nubian desert. They have their own
language, different to the Nubian language and their own traditions. Usually
they have herds of camels or sheep. Once in a year they move to the camel
market of Daraw between Aswan and Luxor to trade their cattle for other
merchandise. Those who haven’t been sedentarized, do not search contact and
continue living the way they have always been living. We have the chance to
know some of them and we are occasionally invited in their camps to try the
Jabana, the local ginger coffee traditionally prepared. They don’t like being
photographed, although some accept and wish us to bring back the photos on
our next visit.
